A timeshare property in Cozumel, Mexico has just become a no-safe zone for tourists. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has just released to the public report of an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in the said property as well as in another location named the Wyndham Cozumel Resort and Spa, formerly known as the Reef Club Cozumel. The disease is a form of pneumonia that spreads through inhalation of water contaminated by bacteria.
Current guests and those who have paid for reservations will benefit from the suspension of cancellation fees. It has been reported that since May 2008, there had been nine instances when Legionnaires' disease had been diagnosed in several American and Dutch guests. The previous outbreak occurred in October 2009, pushing the infection period to more than two years.
A statement by Wyndham's officials however says that they had already disinfected all their water systems and that they had received approval after close monitoring by the Mexican state and the country's federal government health offices.
