A property company is involved for alleged deceptive advertising. HomeAway.com, the parent company of 15 websites, is receiving complaints regarding transparency concerns. A Boulder resident named Jason Mendelson reported spending around $10,000 to rent a single bedroom property in Yountville, California for three months. Yountville is Napa town popular for culinary heritage.
According to Mendelson, the property was advertised on one of HomeAway.com's websites, Vacation Rentals By Owner, with a number of positive client reviews. However, barely two months into his stay, his fiance reported scratching behind their walls in the evening. Rodents had infested their house, which property owner Lupe DeLeon explains as an "unfortunate epidemic in the area".
However, despite disputes between Mendelson and the owner, the Federal Trade Commission says that since HomeAway.com's websites allow users to opt-out of reviews, no action can be taken in relation to the client's complaints. The FTC explains that there has been no deceptive advertising committed by the said company.
