Calls and letters flooded into Orange County, Florida's county from residents infuriated with an impending expansion project by the Marriot Vacation Club International. The company's current 22-storey timeshare venue stands close to Sea World, and the company wishes to build an extension right on Lake Willis.
With the number of complaints bombarding the county, authorities decided to hold back from issuing the company permission to build. One of the complainants, Helen Holtschneider, had put up her retirement home on Lake Willis as far back as 1958. Her clear view of the city from her own dock had since been blocked by the hotel company's various timeshares and hotels.
The company is looking to restrict their project within a small area, but will compensate by constructing taller buildings—something the locals are heavily against. In an interview with WFTV, county zoning officials say the company's plans aren't really much of an issue with their office, only they wish the company would downsize the proposed height from 250 to 200 feet.
