Paphos tourism officials have been arming themselves with stricter regulations, tougher penalties and heightened police presence and have thus declared a war against illegal timeshare operations in their city. Paphos regional board of tourism manager Nassos Hadjigeorgiou says that he "can promise I will fight to clear up our streets."
Hadjigeorgiou adds that his agents are now undertaking clearing operations to get rid of all illegal touts in the streets of Paphos who have been terrorizing tourists. He promises that before that beginning of summer in May, the operation will be a success.
The tourism manager is hoping that with the harsher penalties put in place—six months imprisonment plus a1,500-euro fine—and increased police presence n the streets will be effective in boosting the industry this year in Paphos. Hadjigeorgiou explains that "the law governing this type of instance changed last year and it is now easier for us to bring a case to court."
